babies of (media) war

As I drove my Lovie to school today, NPR aired a piece on Brig. Gen. Viet Luong who, at 9 years old, was part of the Fall of Saigon.  He now trains Afghans to fight against the Taliban in America’s new Longest War.  Lovie innocently, simply asked, “How long has it been?”
“Fourteen years, baby.  This is 14 years since The Towers came down.”  I broke down in tears.  She’s safe in her Austin cocoon, far away from daily bombings, with access to healthy food & clean water.  An amazing school is at her disposal.  She is even protected from current unrest on our own urban streets.  Nonetheless, she is a child that has never lived without her country at war.  The words “war on terror” are heard everyday.  What will that do to our babies?
